This itinerary begins with a stay at Speke's Camp, in a private conservancy neighbouring Maasai Mara National Reserve, and is followed by three nights of walking through the scenic Loita Hills to the east, staying at a mobile tented camp.

Speke’s Camp is located on a private conservancy between Olare Orok and Mara North Conservancies and is a classic tented safari camp with all the comforts. Guests each have their own game viewing vehicle, and walks can be swapped in when requested, with the guests accompanied by their guide and a spotter.

Guided by local Loita Maasai, the walk is a zero-trace expedition, a means to engage with one of East Africa’s most traditional communities and to support rural livelihoods. The route traces long-trodden elephant paths through the forested hils punctuated by splendid lookout points and threaded by rivers. Each lunch and camping site seems more wonderful than the last, and along the way the guides explain what local plants they use for ceremonial purposes, sharing their extensive knowledge of the trees and their medicinal uses.

Day 1 - 4

Guests can choose a road transfer from Nairobi or to fly into Musiara airstrip to access Speke's Camp.
Arrive on time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive. Overnight at Speke's Camp for 3 nights and enjoy further activities, including a visit to Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Day 4 - 7

The trail days start with a beautiful morning drive east from camp to meet the walking guides and pack donkeys at Entersekera.  The multi-day trail is always hiked from west to east, from altitude to the rift valley floor.

At least eight Maasai manage the guiding and the pack donkey caravan that carries the camp kit and luggage. The roomy bell or dome tents have camp cots and cotton bedding, and there are environmentally friendly short-drop toilets. With the overnight bags sorted, the walking begins with around three hours through hilly terrain to the Ol Lasur Valley where River Camp is set for the first night. Cold drinks and hot bucket showers await, and after sunset the evening is devoted to dinner and chats around the campfire under the stars.

Departing at a leisurely 10:00, the second day of walking ascends the Loita Hills, reaching their highest point at Oltyiani, with the chance to visit the Ol Lasur waterfall and perhaps a cooling swim. Lunch is taken along the way, accompanied by endless hazy Rift Valley views. In total, there are five to six hours of walking on this day, with arrival at the second camp, Oltyiani Camp, in late afternoon; time to have a wash before a sunset drink. The third day begins as usual with an early cooked breakfast before camp is broken. It takes another five to six hours to reach the final camp, Ngurumans. The undulating terrain has first a mix of forest and open glades and then descends an old cattle and game track.

On the final day, guests say farewell to the camp crew, who turn for the return journey. After an early breakfast, the walking starts, and it’s a three-hour 1,000 m drop into the Gregory Rift to rendezvous with a vehicle at a place called Enkomongo, north of Lake Natron.  Transfer to JKIA for your outbound flight.
