Nothing is more natural than exploring on foot in Africa's Great Rift Valley, the origin of all living humans. Walking in the national park of Maasai Mara is not permitted, but it is possible in the neighbouring conservancies. Mara North, which spans the Mara river just before it flows into the park, is a perfect place to combine vehicle and foot safaris while staying at a luxury camp. With a 6000ha exclusive walking zone, Serian the Original is the best place to enjoy this combination.
The camp has five spacious tents, of which one is a family unit. All tents are set on hardwood decking, above the Mara River with views over the Oloololo Escarpment. Each has an adjoining bush bathroom with hot and cold running water, flush toilet, and a shower and custom-made bathtub with gorgeous views over the landscape. There is 24hr electricity on a combination of solar and generator.
The Serian camps are accessed via Mara North airstrip, with scheduled daily flights from Nairobi.
Walks take place both in Mara North and in 800 ha of exclusive walking area on the western side of the river and these begin with the crossing of an elegant footbridge to the west side of the Mara river, where there is a sister camp, Ngare Serian. A picnic breakfast is carried and enjoyed at a shady spot overlooking the river or under a rock fig on the escarpment slope.
