Robin Pope operates mobile safaris in South Luangwa of a week (or even more) but it's also possible to enjoy guided walks here in less time. Exclusive and comfortable bush camps are established for the walkers, with two stand-up Meru-style tents sleeping a maximum of four.

Tents are furnished with mattresses on the ground, sheets and blankets and each has a wash basin. There's a shared bucket shower and long drop bush loo. The camps do not skimp on food, and there is a full service, including bar.

Bush camp walks are led in one of the most lagoon rich areas of the Luangwa and hence the game is prolific. It is normal to mix the bush camps overnights with some nights at one of the fixed camps - Luangwa River Camp, Nsefu Camp & Tena Tena. When staying at Tena Tena and Nsefu guests can walk between the two for two or three days, camping on the way.

Minimum age for walks from bush camps is 16 years (in comparison to 21 for Robin Pope mobile safaris).

South Luangwa is accessed via Mfuwe airport, which is a 1 hour 30 minutes flight with Proflight from Lusaka, Zambia.
From Lilongwe, Malawi it is a 1 hour flight. In Lusaka, Lilongwe and Mfuwe guests will be met by a RPS representative to assist with immigration formalities.

Guests are met by their guide at Mfuwe airport for the one hour transfer to Nkwali camp, which overlooks the Luangwa river. When time allows, it is good to add an extra night at the start and stay at Tena Tena or Nsefu fixed camps, and start walking to the bush camp the next morning.

The first camp is set in a remote area of the Nsefu sector.

On the second day, guests walk out of camp early, and explore the area of river, lagoons and ebony woodlands. It's possible to organise a picnic lunch along the way, and otherwise the aim is to reach the next camp location for lunch. While the group is walking, the bush camp will have been moved to the new location. Guests can refresh before lunch and then relax at camp through the middle of the day, and take a shorter walk in the afternoon.

On the third day, guests take an early breakfast, and then walk to a rendezvous with a game viewing vehicle for  transfer to the destination.
