Trainee Trails Guides log hundreds of hours in the field under the mentorship of experienced guides. Lowveld Trails Company is one of South Africa's leading Trails Guide training companies, with a ethos of learning a holistic Trails Guide culture and not just building knowledge.
Along with the instructors, a maximum of three rifle-carrying trainees can be accommodated on a trail. This means there is room for observers to tag along. It's fascinating to see how guides learn to deal with close encounters with potentially dangerous animals, and hone the skills required to guide guests safely in a variety of bushveld conditions.
Observer spots are offered on trails in Timbavati and Balule reserves in Greater Kruger. Three night trails are the norm, and guests should have their own backpacking kit, and the usual style is Primitive (sleep-out).
Observers should bring appropriate footwear, clothing, camping gear and trail food. Packing guidance will be offered in advance by the Lowveld Trails Company.
For Timbavati trails, meet at The Bush Pub & Inn and for Balule trails, meet at Marula bar in Hoedspruit. Both have safe parking. Meet by 11:00 am on day of departure, and trailists will be returned to their vehicles by 11AM on Day 4.
