Primitive Trail hikers sleep under the stars, taking turns to keep watch by a small fire, alone with their thoughts. Each night is spent in a different place, with no fixed routes, and hikers need to carry the essentials for three nights in the wild. Groups set their own pace and explore according to their interests and capabilities. There are no demarcated campsites or routes.
For as long as the water table level allows, water for washing and drinking is sourced from holes dug in the riverbed. Filtered through the sand, it’s usually clean and does not require treatment. It’s hard to imagine a more authentic way to become immersed in the African wilderness.
This 4-day Trail takes place in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, a 53,000 area that shares a long unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park. The area is made up of quintessential lowveld bushveld with extensive, open sodic areas along the Machatan river.
Bookings are offered on a group basis (with the same price for any group size up to eight) and trails take a break between November and mid-April.
Meet at The Bush Pub & Inn by 11:00 am on day of departure. Vehicles can remain there for the duration of the Trail.
The Trail concludes back at departure point by 11:00 am on day 4.
