Walking Wild takes guests on camel-supported explorations accross Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and the conserved lands beyond in Leparua and Il Ngwesi Community Ranch. The venture is owned by the community, and the walks are staffed and guided by people with a lifetime of experience of coexistence with the wildlife and know how to keep guests safe. This walking safari offers a real sense of expedition, moving from the green hills of Lewa to the drier area where the plateau drops off to the north.

Depending on the arrival time, these trips set off from the airstrip or lodge, with guests just carrying water. The daily rhythm is redolent of timeless journeys in the Horn of Africa: breaking camp, loading camels, moving in a caravan and resetting camp. Walkers and their Maasai guides take a more circuitous route than the camel train, pausing to investigate natural treasures, climbing to look-outs, stopping to examine tracks or spot birds.

Walks are undertaken during the cooler early hours of the day and late in the afternoon, but can still be demanding for those not used to the heat and altitude – and are best enjoyed by those who walk regularly. At camp, dome tents have bedrolls, feather pillows, sheets and blankets. They are netted to catch the night breeze and sky view, with a flysheet rig available in case of rain. Each tent has its own bucket shower and long-drop loo in a separate tent nearby.

This itinerary can also be offered as a 2-night or 4-night variation.
