With two permanent lodges and six seasonal camps in South Luangwa National Park, the Bush Camp Company has Zambia's biggest network of walking bases.
Most guests include walks as part of their stay - after all, South Luangwa is the place where walking safaris in Africa first began. These walks are offered from both lodges year round and from all of the seasonal bush camps. They are tuned to guest preferences and can be just a short exploration as part of a game drive, or the main activity of the day. In the main walking season, it's a good idea to book at more than one bush camp and then walk between them, as they are located at foot-friendly distances of 2.5-4 hours.
The best trail conditions are in the dry season from May until October. After then, it gets hotter and rainy season usually starts in mid-November. In the green season from January-April, walks are also enjoyable.
Walks are open to children over 12 subject to the guide's decision.
The access point for South Luangwa is Mfuwe International Airport, from where it is about 45 minutes by vehicle to Mfuwe Lodge.
This sample 6-night itinerary offers a mix of three superb walking locations.
NIGHTS 1 & 2 : MFUWE L ODGE
Ease yourself into Luangwa life with a 2-night stay at the award-winning Mfuwe Lodge. Set beneath a canopy of ebony and mahogany, its thatched buildings are arranged around the banks of two lagoons. The extended deck allows you to make the most of armchair game viewing, outdoor dining, and a shady place to relax by the swimming pool. The airy interior of the lodge has been recently refurbished with comfortable seating, beautiful botanical print cushions, African-inspired art works and unique décor touches. Early each morning, enjoy guided 3-hour walks, returning to camp for breakfast. A game drive or shorter walk is taken in the afternoon.
NIGHTS 3 & 4 : CHINDENI BUSH CAMP
After breakfast, transfer by game viewing vehicle to Chindeni Bushcamp which is a tranquil tented camp on the edge of an oxbow lagoon with the Chindeni Hills providing an amazing backdrop. Recently refurbished, Chindeni embodies understated luxury in the true wild. The central open tented dining area, deck, and bar overlook a lagoon with a stunning view across to the Chindeni Hills. An eclectic mix of contemporary furniture, handcrafted bespoke chandeliers, and unique creative touches harmonize with the surrounding environment.
Chindeni is the base for walks for two mornings.
NIGHTS 5 & 6 : KAPAMBA BUSH CAMP
Kapamba is a quiet sanctuary set in a pristine game-rich area of the park. This special bush camp has had a total renovation. The main lounge and dining area is a large open space extending onto a tiered deck with beautiful 180-degree views of the Kapamba River (which the camp is named after). Dappled light filters through the trees onto the deck, which is scattered with comfortable seating areas to relax and connect to nature. A new addition is a swimming pool on the lower deck, a welcome sanctuary on a hot day.
Enjoy two more morning walks from Kapamba, with game drives or walks in the afternoons.
DAY 7 : DEPARTURE
After the morning walk and breakfast, take a leisurely game drive back to Mfuwe Lodge for transfer to Mfuwe Airport or to your next safari adventure.
On this itinerary, it's possible to swap Mfuwe Lodge for the new KuKaya Lodge.
